Castleford winger Denny Solomona scored a hat-trick of tries to inspire Castleford to their second away victory of the season at the Select Security Stadium.
Castleford were behind by three converted tries, but Solomona’s hat-trick helped the visitors secure 34-24 victory.
Widnes dominated the opening exchanges, scoring three tries within twenty minutes to give themselves a commanding lead. Patrick Ah Van opened the scoring in the third minute, as simple play across the line left the winger in space to finish.
Macgraff Leuluai put the home side further in front, barging his way over the line, before Corey Thompson intercepted a daring pass from Luke Gale to run the length and touch down for his twelfth try of the season.
But with 25 minutes of the game played, Denny Solomona got the first of a hat-trick of tries to reduce the deficit. Corey Thompson was left stranded in defence as Luke Gale found the winger unopposed for an easy finish.
Just three minutes later, Solomona secured his brace, as Adam Milner’s offload caught the Vikings defence off-guard, before the Kiwi was once more found on the wing to make it 18-10 at the break.
It wasn’t long after the restart that Solomona completed his hat-trick, as with just four minutes of the second period played, Jake Webster gifted his team-mate a third simple finish of the afternoon. The hat-trick means Solomona joins Corey Thompson at the top of the try-scoring charts on twelve for the season.
Daryl Powell’s men soon hit the front through tries from Ryan Boyle and Luke Gale, before Widnes hooker Lloyd White set up an exciting finish with a score seven minutes from time to reduce the arrears to just one try.
But the two points were secured by Castleford in the dying minutes as Paul McShane crossed the whitewash with two minutes left on the clock.
The result sees Widnes drop to fifth after four successive Super League defeats, while Castleford are in seventh with five wins for the season.
