Cup competitions across most sports are seen as something of a leveller, Rugby League is no different. Goliaths stand tall, and are sometimes cut down by Davids who play above their level for that one game.
However, these instances of giantkilling are few and far between, but, when they do happen, they are a glorious thing to behold.
In today’s game at the KCOM Lightstream Stadium, full-time Super League side Hull KR took on Championship team Oldham Roughyeds. Hull KR began the game in 11th place in the Super League table, with only two wins and a draw to their name. Oldham sit in ninth in the Championship table with only three wins to their name.
In terms of prestige and class, you’d expect Hull KR to win and do so at a canter. Sometimes expectations aren’t upheld.
Signs of an upset were on the cards when Oldham led their more illustrious opponents 24-6 at half-time. The game was more about Hull KR playing catch-up wit h the side from East Hull pulling the game back to 22-30 but being punished by only converting one of their five tries at this time.
The game itself ended as a 36-22 victory for the Roughyeds, a victory that the Lancastrian outfit fully deserved and Richard Lepori’s 80th minute converted try was the icing on the cake of an excellent performance.
A relative Goliath has been slain by a hard-working David, the reaction on Twitter has been a mix of heat and joy from both sets of fans.
The Goliath reponds to a wounding defeat
This KR fan is not happy, knowing that a cross-city ribbing is just around the corner.

When words fail you, the fallback is reliance on emojis.
KR fan Chris is critical of the club’s recruitment.
@hullkr_online next time you recruit garbage in the off season and accuse the fans of not knowing what they're talking about…forget it!

Words fail this Hull KR fan.
Whilst Hull Kingston Rovers’ fans are angrily seething, you cannot take the performance away from Oldham whose fans are understandably in raptures at their 36-22 win and progression into the next round of the competition.
David the giant-slayer, Oldham and neutral fans rejoice
