With the Man Of Steel awards right around the corner , I have a look at some of the best players to ever win the prestigious title by creating the best squad I can made up of winner from the previous 39 years.
Fullback – Paul Wellens (St Helens) 2000
Paul Wellens is one of the greatest full backs to ever play in Super League making his first team debut in 1998 and spending his 17 year career at the club where he won multiple Super League and Challenge Cups. He was an instant success winning the Man Of Steel within just two years of being at the club helping the Saints to a 2000 Grand Final victory over the Wigan Warriors. He is surely regarded as one of the greatest full backs the game has ever seen and is a true rugby league legend , he makes my squad because of his highly skilled ability both as a captain and with the ball.
Winger – Martin Offiah (Widnes) 1988
Martin Offiah is regarded by many Rugby League fans as being one of the greatest Wingers to grace the Rugby Pitch and this remains true to this very day. He managed to score 42 tries in the 1988 season for Widnes winning them the Championship and the Premiership along the way. This saw Offiah receive the Man Of Steel award for his efforts and also gained a cap in Great Britains tour of Australia in the same year. Offiah then went on to join Wigan in 1992 scoring one of the greatest Challenge Cup final tries against Leeds Rhinos. Since retiring he has become one of the greatest ambassadors for this great sport and will be adored by fans for years to come.
Centre – Jonathan Davies (Warrington) 1994
The Warrington centre is one of the greatest sportsman to come out of Wales in the past 30 years and he showed this with his incredible agility and skill in the 1994 season , he was a vital part of the Warrington team. He was made Man Of Steel in the same season , he also won a great Britain cap scoring one of the greatest International tries of all time against the Australians as part of their tour in 1994.
Centre – Jamie Lyon (St Helens) 2005
The Australian centre was a integral part of their 2005 and 2006 campaigns which saw the start of the Saints dominance in the Challenge Cup. However Lyon as best known for his kicking ability and accuracy with placed kicks scoring over 500 points in just 63 games a big achievement in itself. This goal kicking ability was what saw him win the Man Of Steel award in 2005. Lyons left the Saints in only his second year moving back to the NRL and play for the Manly Sea Eagles. This kicking ability means that he has made my Man Of Steel dream team and he would be the best candidate for goal kicker in the squad.
Winger – Pat Richards (Wigan) 2010
Where else to start than the greatest Australian to ever play in Super League (in my opinion) the 6 foot 4 winger took Super League by storm in 2010 after moving to the Wigan Warriors 4 years earlier. Pat Richards plaid a key role in Wigans 2010 campaign scoring tries and conversions respectively even the odd drop goal. Richards showed very good special awareness both with and without the ball scoring tries from all other the field whether it be the left wing or the right wing he is the the perfect player in his position that has ever graced the English game and is truly and Super League legend.
Stand Off – Iestyn Harris (Leeds) 1998
The second welsh man to make this list Harris is regarded as one of the best Stand Offs of his generation and had incredible ability with the ball. At the Rhinos he managed to score just under 1500 points in his 4 years at the club which helped them win the 1999 Challenge Cup where he became the first skipper to lift Silverware for Leeds in a decade. He also broke the record for most goals kicked in a season for Leeds in the exact same season.Yet again he is regarded along with Pat Richards one of the best kickers in Super League history and that is what saw him win the Man Of Steel in 1998.
Scrum Half – Danny Brough (Huddersfield) 2013
Danny Brough is one of the most recognised Rugby League players in Super League at the moment currently playing for the Huddersfield Giants. It was 2013 though when he started to shine in the world of RL. Brough is one of the most gifted scrum half’s in super league at the moment with some of the best in play kicking ability around. This in play kicking lead the Giants to the league leaders shield in 2013 and resulted in Danny being awarded the Man Of Steel in the same season.
