The 29-year old has been linked with Saints over the last few months and today he has finally put pen-to-paper on a deal to officially take him back to his hometown club.
With Luke Walsh on the way out at St Helens, they’ve been on the lookout for a suitable replacement. As previously mentioned, Smith has been the name most prominently linked with a move to Langtree Park over the last few months as that replacement.
Today, the scrum-half has completed that move back to Saints and has agreed a three-year deal with them.
Smith has been with Wigan since 2012 and has been a key player for the Warriors since making his move to the DW Stadium.
This season he was an important factor as Wigan powered their way to Old Trafford with a series of top performances in the final few games before ultimately claiming Grand Final glory over Warrington with a 12-6 win.
In that game, Smith kicked two goals and was an experienced and level head, as he helped his side claim their fourth Grand Final victory.
Wigan though already have a suitable replacement for Smith in Thomas Leuluai, who has re-joined the club. The 31-year old last played for the Warriors back in 2012 before making the move to the NRL.
