Widnes Vikings have officially launched their official 2017 home colours.
In a kickback to the Club’s infamous 1989 jersey, the Vikings will take to the field in a primarily white shirt with jet black shoulders, black shorts and white socks with black trim.
The strip was previewed in a series of short films released on Sunday Evening via the Club website and social media channels. In its first 24 hours, the campaign had generated over 150,000 impressions and engagements – a figure that is still rising.
Director Brian O’Connor commented:
“We went down a slightly different path this year and decided to preview the kit exclusively on film to our social media audience prior to the official launch image release.“
The film, which stars Vikings wing sensation Corey Thompson, was filmed with four alternative endings, each of which saw Thompson proudly modelling the strip before being hit with a last minute sting. O’Connor explained
“We have produced some great footage over the past few years to generate excitement, not only for the launch of our kit but for the upcoming season.
“This year’s vision was a little tongue in cheek with the aim of showing a different side to one of our stars whilst not taking ourselves too seriously. Corey was fantastic to work with and really embraced the concept. Feedback has been really good from fans of the game, not only within Super League but from the Southern Hemisphere also.
“The feedback to the kit itself has also been very complimentary. The Club wanted to capture the look and feel of the Club’s 1989 World Club Championship winning strip and give it a contemporary makeover. Pride of place on the heart of the jersey is a white star to commemorate the tremendous victory at Old Trafford 27 years ago.”
The strip also incorporates an innovative new fabric to the sleeves. An embossed detail will run through both sleeves giving the garment more depth than ever before.
The strip, manufactured by O’Neills Irish Sportswear, will carry the PlayCasinoGames.com brand on the front of shirt, whilst the lower rear hosts another Mad About Media (parent company) brand Mad About Slots.
Rinnai, a further new partner for 2017, will be seen on the full rear of the shorts – a first for the Vikings.
Other partners include Riverside College, Motorpoint, Backhouse Group, Landscape World, State of Mind and Matt Burrow Properties.
“On behalf of the Vikings, I would like to thank all of our partners for their support in 2017,” O’Connor said.
“In particular the Club would like to thank Mad About Media and O’Neills Irish Sportswear who were both very active in the launch of the #ReadyForAnything campaign.”
