Welcome back to another edition of Blast From The Past , this week I look back at the 2004 Super League play off’s and in particular the match up between the Wigan Warriors and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
Wakefield had been one of the surprise packages of the season managing to finish 6th in the league table and thus qualifying for the play off rounds. They went on to face Hull FC who they beat 28-18 at the KC Stadium. This win set them up to face 2003 runners-up Wigan Warriors who had beaten St Helens in the other play off match.
Both sides had played attacking rugby league all season with Wakefield showing plenty of potential and setting themselves up for what could be a dream end to a very good season. With players such as Gareth Ellis , David Solomona and Colum Halpenny in their ranks they were looking to give Wigan a fight that they weren’t expecting.
