The players that I worshiped.
The club I fell in love with.
Galpharm Stadium, Huddersfield. Friday, 3 February, 2006.
That night I watched these players become World Club Champions. I thought they were indestructible, world beaters for years to come. But this was to be the last bit of silverware lifted by the Bulls.
6 years later, Peter Hood and a £1m black hole and administration.
The money that fans raised had disappeared and Omar Khan and MP Gerry Sutcliffe had become the new owners after paying £150,000 to secure the ownership.
Administration period over.
March 2014. Administration again. 6 point deduction. Relegation
A positive season in the Championship meant they faced Wakefield in the Million Pound game. Wakefield win, Bradford resigned to its lowest ever position of the modern era.
Super League’s joint third most successful club has now been liquidated.
It is now likely that another club will be formed, or even rebranded, and allowed to start life in the Championship, albeit with a 12-point deduction.
The RFL reports that many parties are interested in reviving the club, however that would be on the purchaser’s terms with the debts not needing to be honoured.
I am quite annoyed that after three of four owners this has happened to the Bulls’. The RFL have been satisfied by these parties but they have all failed the club and it’s supporters. It’s time the RFL looked at the process of how they select new owners for clubs.
Sheffield Eagles and York City Knights are in financial trouble of their own, with Halifax also having to cut staff pay by 10% during the off-season. If these clubs all go through the same system and process that Bradford have experienced, the rugby league community will lose clubs full of rich history.
I hope that the Bulls are revamped and can fight back to the top of the world once again.
