So close yet so far, the Castleford Tigers just couldn’t take that extra step and become only the fifth ever Super League champions!
It wasn’t quality, it was maturity that was on display at the end and perhaps fortunate to even make it past their semi-final, but Old Trafford was a bridge too far for them.
But credit where its due, they have been undisputed throughout the season, finishing on 50 points and easing into first place weeks in advance, they deserve all the plaudits for their best season yet!
More high than lows the Tigers endured in 2017 some might think, let’s look back at their pivotal moments in what was a sensational season!
Best Performance: Castleford Tigers 66-10 Leeds Rhinos
A difficult choice as they trounced many opposition in 2017, but the stand-out win for the Tigers had to be their annihilation of eventual champions Leeds Rhinos at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.
Greg Eden and Greg Minikin both bagged a hat-trick of tries as the Tigers were simply unstoppable at such a time.
Further efforts came from Paul McShane, Mike McMeeken, Jake Webster, Michael Shenton as well as Man of Steel contenders Luke Gale and Zak Hardaker.
Gale even added nine goals to take his points tally to 22 points in an efficient display.
This result sent out a clear message on how dangerous and dominant the Tigers would become in 2017, hence its importance.
Though they had to settle for the League Leaders Shield, maybe the first step in a period of dominance for the Tigers in years to come, or just a one off?! Who knows!
