The future is bright! Or is it for Sheffield Eagles? Well they enjoyed a fairly strong season despite many off-field issues that are still ongoing.
Will they have a home in 2018, will they have a full squad?
All that to come but for now, credit goes to Sheffield for surviving with ease despite their critics.
Their willingness to fight on has kept them going as well as the coaching skills of Mark Aston.
Let’s look back at how their season went on and what kind of future is on offer for the Eagles.
Best Performance: Sheffield Eagles 32-20 London Broncos
A surprise win over runners-up London Broncos was Sheffield’s pick of performances in 2017.
London’s form wasn’t the best but neither was Sheffield’s and so to record what could be considered a comfortable win against full-time opposition deserves all the plaudits.
Elliot Minchella starred with two tries as well as further efforts from Menzie Yere, Duane Straughier and top scorer Garry Lo, with Simon Brown slotting over six goals.
The Broncos did respond with four in a highly entertaining clash through Daniel Harrison, Ben Evans, Kieran Dixon and Elliot Kear.
A different range of selection considering it was not a thrashing but for Sheffield to record such a win against London is quite impressive to say the least.
Always a shock when part-time defeat full-time opposition, especially as it was one that obviously helped Sheffield towards comfortable survival and eventually a Championship Shield final place.
The Eagles clearly demonstrated their ability to play entertaining rugby, an aspect that can inspire them on into next season.
