Danny McGuire will take on his former club for the first time when Hull KR travel to Elland Road to take on Champions Leeds Rhinos on Thursday night.
McGuire, who made the switch from West to East Yorkshire at the end of the 2017 season, won 8 Super League titles, 2 Challenge Cups, 3 League Leaders’ Shields and 3 World Club Challenges during his 17-year spell with his boyhood club but will now be looking to get the better of them in this round 2 Super League meeting.
The Rhinos, playing their first of two ‘home’ games at Leeds United’s Elland Road while redevelopments at Headingley continue to take place, won their opening game of the new season at Warrington while the Robins were beaten 24-6 on their return to Super League by a Tom Johnstone inspired Wakefield Trinity.
It will be the first competitive meeting between the two sides since August 2016 in round 2 of the Qualifiers, when the Rhinos came out 22-18 winners at Headingley before going onto secure Super League survival, while KR were relegated 6 weeks later after the memorable golden-point defeat to Salford in the Million Pound Game.
Leeds welcome back Stevie Ward for this game after he missed out on last week’s win at the Halliwell Jones as he had not adequately recovered from the shoulder surgery he had shortly after last year’s Grand Final, but has been passed fit to return. However, Brian McDermott has also lost an option in the forwards as new signing Nathaniel Peteru has been ruled out with a bicep injury which could keep him out of action for as many as 12 weeks should he require surgery. Keith Galloway and Brett Ferres remain unavailable.
Tim Sheens has opted to name an unchanged 19-man squad following last week’s loss to Wakefield at KCOM Craven Park, but Danny Addy has now been ruled out for the season after undergoing surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in pre-season. As well as McGuire, four other members of the Rovers squad will be taking on an ex-club in the Rhinos, with Thomas Minns, Shaun Lunt, Chris Clarkson and Robbie Mulhern all having played for Leeds.
The 19-man squads in full are:
Leeds- Ashton Golding, Tom Briscoe, Kallum Watkins, Liam Sutcliffe, Ryan Hall, Joel Moon, Richie Myler, Adam Cuthbertson, Matt Parcell, Brad Singleton, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Carl Ablett, Stevie Ward, Brad Dwyer, Brett Delaney, Anthony Mullally, Mitch Garbutt, Jack Ormondroyd, Jack Walker.
